Job shadows have very much so influenced my life powerfully. I have gotten an insight into many various careers in the medical field. A year ago, I had no idea there was a difference between and MRI tech, an ultrasound tech, and a radiologist, but as I job shadowed all those, I realized how different they all were. Before doing job shadows I didn’t realize there were so many choices I get to pick from to get a career. I used to know only of nurses and doctors, and job shadows helped me explore more, and also learn the different career choices and the responsibilities of each one of them.

It has been such a pleasure for me to have the opportunity to mentor these young ladies from Barbara Roberts. I have been so impressed, as I have gotten to know the girls, at their determination to succeed against difficult odds. I sincerely hope that whatever contribution that we are able to make will help them achieve the goals that they have set for their futures.

I just finished talking with another job shadow student.  Since we are a small start-up company, students spend most of their time with me talking about career options in aviations.  During the interviews, I hear concise lucid questions from well-prepared students.  Their questions and attitude are clearly goal-oriented.  Having students in our place of business offers us the opportunity to introduce young people to aviation and small business, to dispel any misconceptions and to encourage them to pursue their aviation career options.

When the Keizer Chamber asked me to get involved with high school mentoring in 2003 I was assigned to North.  Many of the students I work with come from very humble beginnings and this program helps the students realize they can succeed.  I think the students initially thought they had nothing in common with the mentors.  But they soon realized we all had to fill out our first job application, find our first job, and work at a fast food location.  Through those experiences we learned, and they will too, all jobs give the opportunity to learn, gain skills, and grow into the next job and one day into a career.  We coined the phrase, Your Time Their Future, but my investment in these students is really for our future too.

When I first heard about job shadowing, I thought it would fun, because I would be able to explore the career that I would like to go into and even explore others that I’m interested about learning more about. Job shadowing for me was a great experience, because I got to job shadow the different kinds of nurses, such as a surgical nurse, and a floor RN. Going out and job shadowing many nurses helped me to learn more about nursing and about all the kinds of jobs you can do by just getting your RN. The job shadow experience helped me to learn more about the career that I am interested in going into and it helped me really decide what I want to do for my career. Even if you were not interested in job shadowing I strongly recommend it to other students do to, because once they do a job shadow they will like it and it will really help them to figure out what they want to do after high school or college.

Going into health occupations I had my mind already set on a career. Dental hygiene. I job shadowed every position in the field of dentistry except hygiene. I shadowed dentists, dental assistants, orthodontists and orthodontist assistants. After one bad job shadow where the orthodontist wasn’t very nice I decided that orthodonture wasn’t for me. Job shadows have had a very positive impact on me even though I already knew what I wanted to do. It was really good for me to get out there and see what else there is, and help me decide on an alternative in case hygiene didn’t work out. Job shadows are very educational and interesting and I would recommend job shadows  for someone who doesn’t know what they want to be.

I have been in the health Occupations classes for two years now. From my experiences, I have learned that I wanted to become a physical therapist. I have been on a couple of job shadows before but I never really knew what happened in emergency rooms and clinics. When I finally got the chance to go on a job shadow to a local physical therapy clinic, I found that I really enjoyed seeing what a physical therapist does. I used to want to be a surgeon but since I didn’t get to a chance to job shadow a surgeon, I changed my career path. Job shadows have a major impact on me so I know what to expect, and what there is to do.

Job shadows are extremely educational and important in helping people discover what career interests them. Personally, they have helped me decide what career I want to pursue after high school. Since being in Health Occupations, and going on numerous job shadows, I have determined that I want to become a nurse in the Pediatric ICU, instead of the NICU, like I originally thought. They have also allowed me to explore the different opportunities, and discover the jobs I don’t want to have. Through job shadows, I have gained a lot of insight into many different professions. They have also allowed me to experience crucial time with medical professionals as they perform daily duties.
